Here's how we turned a recurring reporting task into a reusable Claude skill. If you do the same digital work every week, month, or per client, you could cut that manual effort without building anything complicated. |

1. Pick a workflow that already repeats |
Start with a task that has a clear rhythm, predictable inputs, & a fixed output. |
Claude skills work best when the process is stable & the files live in a consistent place. Think expense reports, dashboard updates, or new client setup. If the task changes wildly every time, don't start there. |

2. Clean up your workspace before recording |
Prepare the exact files you want Claude to see: the dashboard, the CSV export, & the reporting template. Then close unrelated tabs & windows. |
This small step matters more than you'd think. A cleaner workspace gives Claude a tighter signal during recording, which means fewer mistakes on the first pass. |

3. Open Skills & start a screen recording |
In Claude's Skills area in Settings, add a new skill & choose 'Record your screen'. You could also start from Cowork through the plus menu. |

Once recording starts, say your goal out loud: |
'Take the weekly traffic, conversion, & revenue numbers from this export, place them in the reporting sheet, & flag any week-over-week drop above 10 percent.' |
That narration gives Claude real context, not just clicks. |

4. Perform the task slowly & explain your rules |
Complete the task step by step while narrating what you're doing & why. Explain where source files live, which columns matter, how dates are formatted, & what to do when a value is missing. |
This is the part most people rush, but it's where the skill gets its real value. Call out exceptions like renamed columns or blank cells so Claude builds something durable, not a brittle replay of one perfect run. |

5. Show more than one example if edge cases matter |
Record a second short pass with a slightly different layout. Point out common exceptions, like revenue split across two columns that needs combining. This gives Claude a much better shot at handling real work, not just demo work. It could save you 20+ minutes every week on corrections alone. |
When you’re done showing what you want Claude to do, it will process it into a Skill. Go ahead and save it. |

6. Run the skill, check the output, & refine |
Invoke the skill on the next batch & review the output carefully. Check the transferred metrics, summary notes, & exception handling. Human review still matters here. |

Claude speeds up the workflow, but you should still verify anything ambiguous. If the skill misses something, update it. The best results come from iteration. |

Narrate like you're training a new hire: Don't just say what you're clicking. Explain why that field matters, what 'done' looks like, & which exceptions should trigger a review. |
Use a consistent file structure: Skills work better when your source files live in the same folders & use similar naming conventions. If your inputs move around every week, standardize that first. |
Refresh the skill after mistakes: If Claude misclassifies a receipt or misses a reporting rule, record a corrected example. A quick retraining pass is almost always faster than manually fixing the same issue every cycle. |
