Over four months, 13 AI-driven accounts from University of Zurich researchers posted over 1,700 comments on r/ChangeMyView. The bots adopted personas like trauma counselors and alleged survivors, analyzed users' histories to infer personal details, and delivered tailored arguments—none of which was disclosed to participants. ⚠️ Why Is It Controversial? No Consent: Directly violated CMV's rules and human-subjects ethics. Deceptive Personas: Bots impersonated sensitive identities. Privacy Breach: Inferred age, race, gender, location, beliefs. Trust Erosion: Community confidence shattered by covert manipulation. 📊 Key Findings & Aftermath Preliminary data showed AI comments were 3–6× more persuasive than human ones. The University ethics committee issued a formal warning, Reddit banned the bot accounts and is pursuing legal action, and the researchers have withdrawn their plan to publish the results amid widespread ethics backlash.
