OpenAI's roadmap

Sam Altman recently shared OpenAI's updated roadmap on X seen here, revealing significant changes in their AI model strategy. Here's what it means for the future of ChatGPT.

GPT-4.5 (Orion) Is Coming Soon

OpenAI's next release will be GPT-4.5, internally called Orion. It is expected to be the last model without chain-of-thought reasoning, meaning future versions will likely be better at step-by-step problem-solving and complex reasoning.

A More Unified AI Experience

One of the biggest takeaways is OpenAI's plan to simplify its offerings. The current model selection system, where users choose between different versions, will be replaced with a seamless AI experience. This could mean an adaptive system that adjusts intelligence levels automatically based on the task rather than requiring manual selection.

GPT-5 Will Integrate O-Series Models

Instead of releasing o3 (Orion-3) as a separate model, OpenAI plans to merge all advancements into GPT-5. This means:

  • Automatic tool use, including browsing, coding, and document analysis
  • Improved long-term reasoning for complex tasks
  • A more intelligent and fluid experience across ChatGPT and the API
  • Free Access to GPT-5, With Some Limitations

GPT-5 will be available to free-tier users at a standard intelligence level, subject to usage restrictions to prevent abuse. Plus and Pro subscribers will have access to higher intelligence levels, unlocking more advanced capabilities such as enhanced reasoning, deeper research, and additional features like voice, search, and canvas.

When to Expect GPT-4.5 and GPT-5

Altman stated that GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 are expected in "weeks or months," suggesting that GPT-4.5 could launch relatively soon, with GPT-5 following later in the year.

This roadmap indicates a shift towards a more natural and integrated AI system that requires less user input to function optimally.

Updated Prompting Guidance

Getting the Most Out of Reasoning Models

OpenAI has released an updated guide on how to maximise the effectiveness of their reasoning models. The key takeaways? Keep it simple, use delimiters wisely, and avoid unnecessary step-by-step prompting.

o-series models ("the planners") – Designed for deep reasoning, strategy, and decision-making. Ideal for expert-level fields like math, science, and finance.

GPT models ("the workhorses") – Optimized for speed and efficiency, best for straightforward tasks where cost and response time matter more than perfect accuracy.

When to use o-series models:

✅ Tackling ambiguous or complex problems

✅ Analyzing large, unstructured datasets

✅ Multi-step planning and agentic workflows

✅ Debugging and improving code

✅ Visual reasoning with challenging images

Most AI workflows benefit from using both: o-series for planning and decision-making, GPT models for execution.

Prompting best practices:

✔ Keep instructions clear and direct

✔ Avoid chain-of-thought prompts—these models reason internally

✔ Use delimiters (like XML tags or markdown) to structure inputs

✔ Try zero-shot prompting first; add examples only if needed

✔ Be explicit about constraints and success criteria

Grok 3

Elon Musk's Grok 3 is here, developed by xAI Grok 3 was launched four days ago. As of February 20, 2025, it is available to all users at no cost for a limited period, a strategic move by xAI to broaden its reach. Access is provided through grok.com or the iOS and Android apps. It likely won't be free for long so if you haven't tried it yet please do!

Key Features

Grok 3's main features include:

Deep Research: Searches and analyses online sources and X posts, delivering detailed, structured responses ideal for complex research tasks.

Image Generation: Powered by the Aurora model, it's actually damn impressive, just ask it to produce an image in chat and check it for yourself. I'd argue it's probably one of the best text to image models available.

Voice Mode: An upcoming feature, (might already on the ios app, but it is anticipated within days of its debut, will introduce voice interaction, enhancing usability across various contexts.

Technical Foundation

Grok 3 is built on xAI's advanced neural network technology, It was trained using the Colossus supercomputer, leveraging substantial computational power to excel in reasoning, coding, and creative outputs. We are still waiting for final benchmarks but what it shows is that the following statement is still true more computer = better results!

Why It Matters

Grok 3 combines powerful research and generative tools, positioning it as a competitor to platforms like OpenAI's DeepSearch and leading image generation systems. It's great for competition, for all AI users it's another option for us to use. Its current free availability offers a unique chance to experience a premium AI model firsthand, so this is especially important for those who don't have or can't afford premium subscriptions to get a taste of a world leading model.

Free Deepsearch alternative

OpenAI isn't the only player in the deep research game—Perplexity AI has just launched Deep Research, a powerful tool for generating in-depth research reports on any topic. Even better? It's available for free with up to 5 queries per day for non-subscribers and a massive 500 queries per day for Pro users.

Why it Matters

Outperforms top AI models – Scored 21.1% on Humanity's Last Exam, beating Gemini Thinking, o3-mini, o1, DeepSeek-R1, and others.

Fast & accurate – Hits 93.9% accuracy on the SimpleQA benchmark while completing most tasks in under 3 minutes.

Combines search, reasoning, and coding – It doesn't just retrieve results; it iteratively refines research into clear, expert-level reports.

What You Can Use It For

Deep analysis in finance, marketing, health, tech, and more

Researching complex, multi-step topics

Generating structured, high-quality insights

How to Try It

Head to Perplexity, then simply select "Deep Research" from the mode selector in the Perplexity search box and get started.

Meta's next big bet: Humanoid Robotics - Meta is forming a new robotics division within Reality Labs to develop AI-powered hardware for humanoid robots. Instead of launching its own branded robots, Meta aims to create AI systems, sensors, and software, partnering with companies like Unitree Robotics and Figure AI. Led by former Cruise CEO Marc Whitten, the team plans to integrate AR and VR data to advance robotics, though consumer-ready models are still years away. Read the article here.

OpenAI Rejects Musk's $97.4B Buyout OfferOpenAI's board has unanimously rejected a $97.4 billion acquisition bid from a consortium led by Elon Musk, reaffirming that the company "is not for sale." Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI who left in 2019, has been vocal about his concerns over its ties with Microsoft and recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman. The bid came with conditions aimed at preventing OpenAI from further commercializing its operations, signalling Musk's push to influence its future direction. Read the article here.

Apple's Siri Overhaul Faces Delays Due to Engineering Issues - Apple's long-awaited Siri upgrade—a key part of its AI-powered Apple Intelligence—has hit engineering roadblocks and software bugs, delaying its release from iOS 18.4 to at least iOS 18.5 in May or later. The revamped Siri is designed to interpret on-screen content and integrate with third-party apps, but internal testing has revealed inconsistent performance. This setback may also slow down Apple's broader AI and smart home plans, including new HomePod mini and iPad-like home hub devices.
