Altman sheds light on AGI claims - (Issue #37)

Plus: The worlds smallest super computer!

Welcome back, Indexers!

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2025 and what a year it's going to be! I genuinely hope you are strapped in and ready for the wild, wild ride that 2025 is going to be! It has already started off with a bang with Jensen Huang kicking off CES 2025 with some serious flexing, showing how NVIDIA plans to keep its AI dominance locked down and then  Sam Altman's with his thought provoking blog post with some bold AGI predictions and mentions of super-intelligence! Oh and Elon said Grok 3's training is complete and has 10x the compute compared to Grok 2... Let's get to it.

AGI Predictions

Sam Altman is dropping some big hints about AGI, and they're hard to ignore. In a surprisingly candid blog post, (cleverly named reflections), OpenAI's CEO just declared they now "know how to build AGI" – a dramatic shift from the company's typically measured stance.

The timing is interesting: Altman sees 2025 as the year AI agents will start meaningfully shaking up the workplace. But here's the twist – while OpenAI's latest model is smashing performance benchmarks, they're actually losing money on their $20/month subscription. Turns out success can be expensive when your users are maxing out your compute resources.

Most intriguing is Altman's pivot from talking about AGI to what he calls "superintelligence." It suggests OpenAI might already be looking past AGI to something even bigger. For a CEO who's usually careful with his words, these declarations feel like a significant moment in AI's evolution.

NVIDIA's Super Computer

Jensen Huang kicked off CES 2025 with some serious flexing, showing how NVIDIA plans to keep its AI dominance locked down. The showstopper? Project DIGITS – a pocket-sized AI powerhouse that brings supercomputer-level processing to your desk. Think running massive AI models without phoning home to the cloud.

But the real story might be Cosmos, NVIDIA's new platform for physical AI. It's basically a simulator on steroids, helping companies fast-track their robot and self-driving car development by running countless virtual scenarios. Toyota's already jumped on board, suggesting this could be a game-changer for getting autonomous vehicles on the road faster.

Meanwhile, the RTX 5090 GPU announcement shows NVIDIA isn't forgetting its gaming roots. With 92 billion transistors and some mind-bending AI capabilities, it's clear Huang is betting big on AI-enhanced everything – from gaming to content creation.

While competitors scramble to catch up with their own AI chip announcements, NVIDIA's moves suggest they're already playing a different game entirely – one where AI isn't just about processing power, but about reshaping how we interact with both digital and physical worlds.
