Gemini just added Skills, and I've been waiting on this one. A skill is a saved recipe for a task you repeat, so you stop retyping the same prompt every week. I built a few this week, and this guide shows the easiest way to make yours. |

Gemini Guide |
How We Used Gemini Skills To Answer Customer Emails In Seconds |
|
|
A small shop owner answers the same questions about shipping, returns, & delays all day. With a Gemini skill that holds her policy sheet & her writing style, each reply takes seconds, & every answer stays accurate. |
Why Gemini Skills Work |
A skill is a saved set of instructions Gemini follows the same way every time, so you get steady results without rewriting a prompt. |
✅ Save a task once, then call it anytime with a forward slash
✅ Attach files like price sheets or policy docs so Gemini stops guessing
✅ Chain two skills in one chat, like a recap skill plus a writing-style skill
✅ Move skills between Gemini, ChatGPT, & Claude, since they download as simple files |
How We Did It |
Here's how we built a customer reply skill from scratch. If you answer the same kinds of messages every week, this could give you back hours, and it's easier than it looks. |
1. Open Skills in your Gemini settings |
Head to Settings & find Skills. You'll see three ways to start: 'Create with Gemini' (it interviews you), 'Create manually' (you type the name, description, & instructions), & 'Upload skill' (for files). Skills also live in the side panel in Gemini Spark, the more hands-on version of Gemini. We'll skip this page for now, since there's a faster route. |
|
|
2. Describe the job in a normal chat |
Open a new chat & tell Gemini what you want: |
'Create a skill called Customer Reply. When I paste a customer email, draft a short, friendly answer that follows my returns & shipping policy.' |
Gemini saves it as a skill & shows you what's inside. It won't be perfect on the first pass, so read the instructions & fix anything that's off. |
|
|
3. Add your policy files |
Every skill is built on a text file called skill.md (plain text with a little formatting), & it can carry other files along. Go to Settings, choose 'Upload skill', & drag in your skill.md plus your returns policy or a rates spreadsheet. Gemini fills in the title, description, & instructions. Hit 'Create'. Now every reply uses your real policy instead of a guess. |

4. Teach it your voice |
Replies should sound like you. If Gemini is connected to your Gmail, ask it to search your sent folder for three emails that capture your voice & format them so you can copy them all at once. Paste them into a new chat & ask for a 'Write Like Me' skill. It saves your openings, tone, sentence length, & closings. Write differently to clients, sponsors, or family? Make one skill for each. |
|
|
5. Call both skills in a new chat |
Start a new chat & type a forward slash. Pick 'Customer Reply', then add 'Write Like Me' the same way. Paste the customer's email, add a quick note like 'offer a refund', & send. No long prompt needed. Open the three-dot menu to send the result to a Gmail draft, then give it a read before you hit send. You stay in control, & replies that took minutes now take seconds. |
|
|
6. Package up anything that already works |
Had a long back-and-forth with Gemini that finally landed on a great result? Open that chat & say 'Package up everything we just did into a skill.' It works on old chats too, so you may already have a few worth saving. |

Use Cases |
If you repeat a task with the same inputs & a similar output, it's a skill waiting to happen. Here's where else it fits: |
Marketing: Turn one launch brief into the same set of posts, in your brand voice every time |
Teaching: Write student feedback in one steady format that follows your rubric file |
Sales: Build quotes that pull prices from your rate sheet instead of memory |
Hiring: Check every applicant against the same checklist & get a short summary back |

Bonus Tips |
Start from a chat that already worked: Finished a back-and-forth that nailed the result? Package it into a skill right then, while the details are fresh. |
Only upload skills you trust: A skill file tells Gemini what to do, so stick to sources you know. Open the file & read it first if you can. |
Reuse skills across tools & teammates: Skills download as files, so the same one can work in ChatGPT or Claude. Build it once, then share it with your team so everyone gets the same result. |
